Unraveling the Science Behind CBD: A Comprehensive Look
Undoubtedly, there is a buzzing interest surrounding the use of cannabidiol, or as it is more widely known, CBD. The non-psychoactive compound derived from the Cannabis Sativa plant has been lauded for its potential therapeutic uses, ranging from pain management to anxiety relief. Owing to this dramatic rise in popularity, there has been an inundation of CBD research. Scientists labor relentlessly to clarify the mechanisms behind CBD, and although a considerable amount of work is yet to be done, pivotal discoveries have been made.
A profound dive into CBD begins with an understanding of the human body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a complex cell-signaling system that plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis in our bodies. Existing in all vertebrates, the ECS comprises of receptors, enzymes, and endocannabinoids which are similar to cannabinoids but are produced by our bodies. The two primary receptors are CB1 and CB2 receptors, predominantly found in the central nervous system and the peripheral system respectively.
Interestingly, it’s the ECS that provides a plausible explanation for the CBD benefits often touted. When CBD is introduced into the body, it does not bind directly to these receptors like THC (the psychoactive compound in Cannabis). Instead, it is believed CBD stimulates the body to use more of its endocannabinoids, particularly 2-AG, which is associated with reducing inflammatory responses and pain sensation. This is referred to as the CBD mechanism of action.
Scientific exploration into the CBD effects for health and wellness often distinguishes it from THC. While THC binds to the CB1 receptors causing a “high” effect, CBD is non-psychoactive. It actually inhibits the compound FAAH that breaks down a neurotransmitter in our brain called ‘anandamide’ – often dubbed the ‘bliss molecule’. Greater concentrations of anandamide in the body reportedly enhance mood and reduce pain sensations, establishing one way CBD might help manage psychological issues like anxiety and depression.
Recent investigations in CBD clinical trials have focused primarily on its potential application in neurology, with promising results in the treatment of rare epileptic conditions like Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. In June 2018, following these findings, the FDA approved the use of Epidiolex, a purified form of CBD to treat severe forms of these seizures.
CBD influences the TRPV1 receptors that help regulate pain sensation and body temperature. By activating these receptors, CBD is believed to help minimize pain, inflammation, and even slow down certain types of cancers. However, these findings are preliminary, and more robust clinical trials are required to substantiate these claims.
Similarly, the use of CBD for anxiety and depression treatment stems from CBD studies on the ‘hippocampus’ – a part of our brain associated with memory formation and navigation. Chronic stress and anxiety lead to the shrinkage of neuron cells in this region. CBD induces neurogenesis (the process of new neurons formation) lending credence to the claims that CBD may potentially lessen anxiety and depressive symptoms.
However, despite these promising findings, the exploration of CBD is still an evolving field, and its claims are juxtaposed with concerns. The FDA has issued warnings about the illegal marketing of CBD products that unabashedly claim unproven medical benefits, indicating the need for extensive research.
CBD’s interaction with other drugs remains a focus of study, given that it can inhibit the function of cytochrome P450, a family of liver enzymes involved in drug metabolism. This interruption can alter how we process certain pharmaceutical drugs, so consultation with healthcare professionals becomes essential for people considering CBD.
In conclusion, it appears we are only skimming the surface of understanding CBD’s potential uses and effects. Continuous efforts in clinical trials and laboratory research are necessary to fully demystify the science behind CBD. As we learn more, it is hoped, we will be able to harness CBD’s full potential safely and effectively.
